Mercedes’ Answer to the X3

The earth’s oil reserves are dwindling, and greenhouse gases from cars and factories are leading to global warming. Why then is Mercedes launching an all new SUV? Well, the short answer is because they can, and because they think they have to. BMW, who made the X5 in response to Mercedes’ then new ML-Class, made a smaller SUV, the X3. In a bid to one-up BMW, Mercedes now comes out and releases the GLK.

Unlike the X3 (and any BMW for that matter), the GLK is boxy and angular instead of sexy and curvaceous. It has tough, old-school appearance, though Mercedes did bling out the alloys. Despite its tough appearance though, the GLK’s ride is soft and supple. That is great news for passenger comfort, though it obviously loses points in terms of handling. Real off-roading is out of the question, but light off-road trails are not going to be a problem. Compared to the X3, the Benz is easier to drive around town, with lighter steering and as said earlier, softer suspension. But when the twisties come however, the X3 still trumps the Benz.

In all, Mercedes have a competitive package in the new GLK. It may be a little late, but it still has enough going for it to give the X3 a run for its money.
